Seeking to snap a four-game losing streak, the Trigg County High School baseball team took out its recent frustration on Russellville in a big way Monday, pounding the Panthers 21-0. It was the first time the Wildcats have scored that amount of runs since April 9, 2018, which also came against Russellville.

The Trigg upperclassman trio of Andrew Williamson, Joseph Peca and Bryce Cunningham, who batted 1-2-3 in Monday’s lineup, more than set the tone for the ‘Cats, combining for 9 of the squad’s 17 hits, as well as 13 RBIs and seven runs scored. The threesome respectively went RBI single, RBI double and two-run single — all with two outs in the top of the seventh inning — to cap the rout.

Trey Carr was no slouch himself on the mound. The senior hurler struck out 10 in the four-hit shutout. Carr (3-0) walked three but stayed perfect on the bump in 2021 with the seven-inning gem. Carr also helped himself by going 2-for-5 with a sacrifice fly. He was one of eight Wildcats to register an RBI.

Trigg County stranded two runners in the first inning but did not miss its opportunity to pounce during the next frame. The first six Wildcats to come to the plate in the second inning reached base, and at one point TCHS scored a run in five consecutive at-bats. The aforementioned three-headed monster of Williamson, Peca, and Cunningham added RBIs during the six-run second.

By giving up six hits, seven runs, and six walks in 2 2/3 innings, Daylan Roberts (0-6) took the loss. Eric Zammarripa fared no better, surrendering four hits, six runs, and a walk, in 3 1/3 innings in relief. The Panthers allowed 12 runs to be scored in the final inning, leading to the second-biggest loss this year.

Russellville (2-18) got two of its four hits from Davin Holloway. The Panthers put two runners on in the bottom of the second with a walk and hit-by-pitch, but Carr went on to strike out the side to end any threat. RHS then loaded the bases in the third, but Carr registered another K to keep Russellville off the board. Behind an RBI triple from Williamson and sac fly by Peca, Trigg all but put the game away in the fifth inning, putting RHS in a 9-0 hole.

The Wildcats (6-9) will play the third of three straight road games May 11 at Madisonville-North Hopkins. Trigg is 3-6-1 in 2nd Region games this season.
