How hot were Caldwell County’s girls in the first quarter?

Majah Hollowell hit a shot from the logo at midcourt to give the Lady Tigers a 27-7 lead over Lyon County after one quarter. It was Caldwell’s seventh 3-pointer of the period.

How much did Caldwell cool off in the second half?

The Lady Tigers did not record a field goal after halftime.

But Caldwell had built enough of a cushion in the first half, and was strong at the free throw stripe while holding off the Lady Lyons for a 63-48 victory Saturday afternoon at the CAB gym in Princeton.

It was the final game of the regular season for Caldwell, which is taking next week off before hosting the 7th District tournament the following week.

Lyon (14-8) opened the game with a 3 from Gracen Wynn.

But Caldwell (8-11) responded with a 15-0 run to take the lead for good.

Jacey Jaggers and Katy Smiley each buried three shots from behind the arc as Caldwell built its 20-point lead after 8 minutes.

The Lady Tigers’ biggest lead came at 34-10 before Lyon began to regroup.

The Lady Lyons cut seven points off the lead by halftime at 40-23.

Lyon then made a big move in third quarter, outscoring Caldwell 14-6 in the frame to pull within 46-37.

The Lady Lyons never allowed Caldwell to get comfortable with the lead, getting as close as 46-39 early in the fourth period.

But while the Lady Tigers couldn’t connect from the field in the second half, they made good at the free throw line.

Caldwell hit 82.1 percent at the stripe after halftime, going 23 of 28. For the game, the Lady Tigers were 27 of 34 for 79.4 percent.

Lyon, on the other hand, was two for three at the free throw line in the contest.

Jaggers finished with a double-double for the Lady Tigers, garnering a game-high 23 points with 10 rebounds. She was seven of eight at the charity stripe. Hollowell had 18 points, with a 13-of-16 showing at the line. Smiley added 11 points for Caldwell.

The Lady Tigers finished the day eight of 15 from 3-point range, but just six of 26 on two-pointers.

Rose Smith led the Lyon scoresheet with 14 points. Calista Collins had a double-double of her own with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Kenttavia Matthews added 10 points for the Lady Lyons.

Lyon had six more field goals in the contest — 20-14 — but could not overcome the 25-point difference at the free throw line.

Lyon had beaten Caldwell twice earlier this season — by scores of 41-40 and 46-39.

Lyon is scheduled to visit Dawson Springs on Monday.

Caldwell won’t play again until Thursday, March 18, when it faces Madisonville-North Hopkins in the 7th District tournament in Princeton.
