Competing without several of its top wrestlers, Christian County finished sixth Saturday at the North Oldham Mustang Classic.
The Colonels scored 104 points with just seven wrestlers taking the mat. Oldham County took first place with 207 points.
Seventh-grader Deameion Leavell won the 120-pound class with a 7-5 sudden death victory over Bullitt East’s Alex Sauss. Leavell won his first two matches of the day by 5-0 and 8-6 decisions. Leavell entered the weekend ranked 23rd in the state but is expected to move up over the next few weeks.
Mason Kellett won the 145-pound class with a 1-0 decision over Oldham County’s Trey Cranfill. The Colonel sophomore entered the weekend ranked 16th in the state. Cranfill is ranked 22nd.
JaRi Campbell finished second in the 106-pound class. He won his opener over Bullitt East’s Jack Willard by fall and defeated Anderson County’s Luke Knight 18-4 in the semifinals. He lost to Oldham County’s Miller Brown, who is ranked ninth in the state, 11-1 in the championship match.
Campbell came into the match ranked sixth in the state.
A.J. Harvey, ranked 12th in the state in his division, finished second in the 220-pound class. He won his first two matches by fall and scored a 12-5 decision over No. 10 Blake Fox of Oldham County. He lost to No. 8 Dakota Brooksbank of Simon Kenton by injury default in the championship match.
Landon Brumfield finished third in the 152-pound class. He was knocked into the consolation bracket with a first-round loss to No. 4 Jeffrey Parker of Western Hills. He rallied to win three straight matches to place third.
Christian County is scheduled to host Senior Night Wednesday at Lyle Dunbar Gymnasium.
