Keane Mumford, Hopkinsville’s record holder in the shot put and discus throw, signed Tuesday night to continue his track and field career at Tennessee State University. Mumford decided on the OVC school Tuesday and held a signing ceremony at his home that was broadcast on Facebook.

Mumford was named to the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Area team last year after finishing seventh in the shot put at the state track meet, becoming the first Tiger to reach the podium at state in the event in nearly two decades.  Mumford also finished 13th at state in the discus throw.

They showed me a lot of love, and all the coaches took the time out the day to meet me and get to know me and my family,” Mumford said.  “Tennessee State has a lot of track history and I feel like they can help me grow into a better athlete.  Also, I’ve met some teachers who have showed me different routes for the path I want to go in school.”

Mumford owns the school record in both the shot put [47-3] and discus throw [136-4].  He was shooting for a throw of 50 feet this spring in the shot put before the KHSAA canceled the spring season Tuesday due to the COVID-19 virus.

Mumford said he plans to study physical therapy at TSU.
