Points were tough to come by for Trigg County as its basketball season came to a close with a 36-17 loss to Union County in the opening round of the Girls’ Second Region Basketball Tournament.

The 17-point output was the lowest for Trigg since a 56-14 loss to Hopkinsville four years ago. It was also the fewest points scored in a region tournament game, eclipsing the old mark of 25 points in a 77-25 loss to Madisonville in 1977.

Trigg’s downfall Tuesday was the combination of a cold shooting night and turnovers.  The Lady Wildcats hit just 6 of 30 shots from the field. However, getting 30 shots up proved to be tough due to 29 turnovers, many of them on passes.  Union County scored 20 points off the Trigg miscues.

While Trigg was struggling to make shots, Union did not take advantage early.  Union led 6-3 after one quarter and 12-8 at halftime.

However, the Bravettes found their footing in the second half.  They hit 9 of 17 shots in the second half and outscored Trigg 19-3 in the decisive third quarter to take a 31-11 lead into the fourth quarter.

DeDe Barbee and Olivia Noffsinger both scored four points for Trigg County. Marleigh Reynolds added nine rebounds, and Kara Hyde had six.  Reynolds was named to the All-Region Tournament Team.

Mati Hagan led Union County with 13 points. Katelyn Hagan came off the bench to add nine points.

Union County moves into Friday’s semifinals where they will play Hopkinsville.

Trigg County’s season ends with a record of 10-14. It’s Trigg’s third straight season of 10+ wins which hasn’t happened since 1994.
